Although numbers were down this year, possibly again due to that certain organisation deciding not to include community groups in their festival advertising or perhaps in part also because that same organisation decided not to publish a festival guide and rely solely on on-line advertising. Never-the-less a small band of interested gathered faithful assembled alongside the Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial in Green Park for the Sisters’ 26th Annual History Walk.
This year again lead by Robert French of the Pride History Group, the walk focused on the area from Green Park down to Lower Oxford Street, stopping off at the spot in Oxford Square where the first walk ended in 1989. On the way a detour was made to view the N.S.W Police Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officers Programme’s exhibition at the Surry Hills Police Centre marking the 25th anniversary of the programme.
As always the gathered faithful were encouraged to share their experiences and memories about the fabulous venues of lower Oxford Street. It was and always is a great honour to have elders, activists and 78'ers with us to contribute insight and personal memories. The recollections of the Police Station on the night and protests following are particularly powerful and we are thankful for and appreciate those contributions.
The perambulation concluded at Whitlam Square and a small group of enlightened gathered faithful then accompanied the Sisters to up to the Oxford Hotel for a refreshing libation, social intercourse and further sharing of experiences and reminiscences.
